Domestic Help Stages Elaborate Hoax
In a shocking incident in New Friends Colony, Delhi, a housemaid masterminded a fake raid impersonating Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials, leading to a substantial robbery. On February 11, three individuals clad in police-style uniforms entered the residence of 86-year-old RC Sabharwal and his wife, Usha, claiming to be conducting a legal search.
The culprits reportedly robbed the elderly couple of around ₹4 lakh in cash, as well as luxury watches and other valuables, all while falsely representing themselves as authorities.
Background of the Incident
Rekha Devi, the maid at the Sabharwal residence, orchestrated the entire scheme along with four relatives, including a serving constable from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and a retired army personnel. The thoughtfully planned operation highlighted how criminals sometimes exploit the vulnerabilities of the elderly, who are often home alone.
According to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Aishwarya Sharma, the maid was able to devise a plan to mislead her employers because she recognized the couple’s weakened resistance to authority due to their age.
How the Hoax Unfolded
The Raid
The fake raid took place around 10 a.m. on February 11. The impersonators, armed with no official documentation, instructed the couple to place their valuables, cash, and mobile phones on a table. They threatened the couple with legal repercussions if they did not comply.
“They refused to show any warrant or authorization letter and began confiscating phones, preventing the elderly couple from alerting anyone,” said ADCP Sharma. The couple was significantly intimidated, leading to the surrender of a substantial amount of legitimate cash meant for a business transaction.
Tipping Point
Unexpectedly, Usha Sabharwal managed to alert her grandson, who is a senior lawyer. This immediate action prompted a sudden shift in the dynamics of the situation. Realizing they were about to be exposed, the impostors fled the scene, managing only to take a fraction of what they had initially threatened to seize.
“The situation rapidly changed when the grandson arrived, leading to the thieves abandoning some of their plans,” police said. They managed to escape with approximately ₹3 to 4 lakh and several luxury watches.
Investigation and Arrests
Following the incident, the couple filed a complaint at the New Friends Colony police station. An FIR was registered, and investigations quickly pointed to an insider job. Through technical surveillance and investigation, police identified Rekha Devi as the key conspirator behind the hoax.
The police arrested two of the five suspects on Wednesday. Those arrested include Devi and another accomplice, identified as Pooja Rajput.
The Implicated Parties
The remaining suspects include Prakash, Pooja’s husband who is an ITBP constable, their son Manish, and Updesh Singh Thapa, also known as Pintu, a retired army personnel. The ongoing investigation aims to locate the absconders and recover the missing stolen items.
During a search of Pooja Rajput’s residence, police discovered an ITBP deputy commandant uniform, an ID card, and a wireless communication device. These items were allegedly used to simulate official police activity during the raid.
