Modi Discusses West Asia Situation in Lok Sabha
On March 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha regarding the escalating conflict in West Asia, particularly the Israel-Iran situation. He assured that Indian missions in the affected nations are providing continuous support and have established 24/7 control rooms to assist Indian citizens caught in the crisis.
Amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions, PM Modi highlighted India’s preparedness in various sectors, including energy supply, national security, and humanitarian assistance. The Prime Minister emphasized that the current crisis poses significant challenges but assured that the government is actively working to mitigate potential impacts on Indian citizens and the economy.
Importance of Indian Nationals’ Safety
Noting that nearly one crore Indians reside in Gulf countries, Modi asserted that the government’s priority remains the safety of Indian nationals abroad. He mentioned that he has spoken with leaders from West Asian countries, receiving assurances regarding the security of Indian citizens.
“It is essential that a united voice goes from India’s Parliament on this crisis,” Modi stated, underscoring the need for a collective response to the challenges arising from the conflict.
Government’s Swift Response to the Crisis
Emergency Support and Evacuations
PM Modi highlighted the government’s proactive measures to assist Indians in the affected regions since the onset of the war. He noted that over 375,000 Indians have been successfully evacuated, including about 1,000 individuals from Iran, mostly medical students.
Referring to the government’s established support mechanisms, he mentioned that Indian missions are consistently issuing advisories and providing necessary assistance. “Through these mechanisms, prompt information is being provided to all those affected, whether they are Indian workers or tourists,” he added.
Education and Continuity Measures
In a move to ensure continuity of education, the CBSE has cancelled Class 10th and 12th examinations for Indian schools in Gulf nations, a step that reflects the urgent need to prioritize the well-being of students amidst the turmoil.
“The government is sensitive, vigilant, and ready to provide every assistance,” Modi reassured, signaling the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Indian families in the region.
Challenges in Energy Supply
With the Strait of Hormuz being a critical route for India’s energy imports, Prime Minister Modi recognized the implications of the conflict for India’s energy security. He highlighted the government’s focus on ensuring uninterrupted supplies of fuel, including petrol, diesel, and LPG.
“Continuous work has been done to ensure that the supply of petrol and diesel continues smoothly across the entire country,” Modi declared, emphasizing the measures taken to boost domestic production and prioritize local consumption of LPG.
Energy Diversification Strategy
Past Measures Proving Effective
The Prime Minister noted that India has expanded its energy import sources from 27 to 41 countries over the last decade, thereby lowering dependence on any single region. “The steps taken over the past decade regarding energy security have become even more relevant in today’s circumstances,” he stressed.
As part of India’s strategic initiative, the government has built a Strategic Petroleum Reserve exceeding 53 lakh metric tonnes, with plans underway to further augment this capacity to above 65 lakh metric tonnes.
Enhancements in Production and Refining
Modi also emphasized the advancements made in India’s refining ecosystem over the past eleven years, reflecting a significant increase in the nation’s refining capacity. This enhancement has positioned India to better manage ongoing global energy challenges.
Moreover, the Prime Minister underscored India’s ongoing engagement with global suppliers and monitoring of Gulf shipping routes to ensure the safe passage of essential goods, including oil and gas.
Domestic Energy Transformation
The Prime Minister remarked on the remarkable progress made in the area of renewable energy. He cited the growth in ethanol blending, explaining that it has risen dramatically from about 1-1.5% a decade ago to nearly 20% today.
“The scale at which work is being done on alternative fuels today will make India’s future even more secure,” he asserted, pointing to initiatives like electrification of railways and the expansion of the metro network as vital steps in energy transformation.
Addressing Economic Impacts and Agricultural Stability
Modi acknowledged that the ongoing crisis has repercussions on the global economy, emphasizing that energy is the backbone of modern economic systems. He assured that India is working on comprehensive strategies to address market volatility, with an emphasis on bolstering food security and agricultural productivity.
“Our government did not allow the burden of global crises to fall on the farmers,” stated Modi, referencing India’s robust foodgrain stocks and emergency preparations for Kharif sowing.
Future Readiness and Afghan Market Dynamics
Moreover, the Prime Minister provided reassurances regarding coal availability amid rising electricity demands, reporting that adequate coal stocks are present at power plants across the country. He also mentioned record coal production levels contributing to this stability.
Concluding his address, Modi urged citizens to remain patient, vigilant, and to avoid hoarding or spreading misinformation amid these uncertain times. He appealed to all state governments to ensure monitoring and swift action against any elements seeking to exploit the crisis.
